Hey there, I’m David Cruz

I am the Founder, Owner, and Head Trainer of DaCruz K9s Off-Leashed. I have been in the dog training industry since 2016 working directly with a variety of different breeds in obedience, off-leash, family pet training, and Police K9 work.

I established DK9 in 2019 to offer people and their dogs a new method of training. I believe that owning a dog is an amazing and rewarding experience, but also a responsibility, not a luxury. Training your dog properly will lead you to a greater understanding of the animal, and I firmly believe in the owner-pet relationship being one of mutual understanding and respect. I immerse you fully in the training process, and with this easy approach, I find that owners learn just as much, if not more, than their dogs.

  • We sent our 2 French Bulldogs for the 4 week off-leash program....we were kinda skeptical because hey they are French Bulldogs, but after talking to David I felt much more comfortable. When our pups (just 11 months old) came back to us they were and still are amazing!   • I have a 5 year old German Shepherd named Kody. He was very protective of me and my family to the point where it was difficult to have friends over. He had a lot of social anxiety when out and did not trust anyone else besides me. Besides the big tough guy act he puts on, Kody has the biggest heart of any dog I knew. I wanted other people to see that in him. That is where David came in and was able to calm his anxiety towards new people. The moment I first called David he was very professional, helpful, and understanding. What makes David stand out the most is his compassion for dogs and his values. He takes in your dogs as if they were his own. That was very reassuring, especially when I decided to do the 4 weeks of advance training with him. During the 4 weeks of training, David would send videos and pictures of Kody and I was constantly amazed at his progression. When I finally got him back I was baffled during the demo. David was able to take Kody off-leash around Target's parking lot and in front of the main entrance without any issues. I was amazed seeing Kody unfazed by the loud noises of the bus driving by and constant flow of people in an out of the store. It was great seeing this transformation and couldn't be happier with Kody's behavior. David has done a tremendous job and continues to educate me on different things to do with Kody. FAQ’s

  • DK9 is a licensed kennel with the city of Shelton, but we run our business out of our home. While training with us your dog will have their own crate/kennel but live in our home learning and growing with us.

  • Herm Sprenger Pinch Collar

    For all of our programs we use a 2.25mm size pinch collar from Herm Sprenger for on leash training. This is a natural form of correction your pup receives that is closely related to the “scruffing” the mother dog would give her pups if they were playing too rough or nursing too hard. We prefer this type of correction because it is an instinctual one that is widely understood by puppies and still keeps your relationship with your pup one of mutual respect.

    We use the same size for all breeds of dog that we train.

    E-Collar Technologies ET300

    For our Advanced/Off-Leash program we use either an ET-300 or ME-300 (depending on your pup’s size) from E-Collar Technologies. We find that this collar can act as an “invisible leash” while working your dog off-leash. It acts as an emergency “invisible leash” so you are always able to get your pup back to you. The methods in which we introduce this collar to our training dogs involves a period of time of just wearing it then slowly working into it while on a long line to reinforce the concept at hand.

    We specifically only use this brand for our off-leash training due to the stimulation rather than an electric voltage shock. Some off-leash branded collars provide an actual electric voltage shock while E-Collar technologies shock provides just that, the “shock factor,” of ignoring a command the first time around. This can be more related to stimulation therapy and a sharp pins and needles feeling.

  • In order for our trainer’s to build a connection and training bond with your dog we do not allow visits during the Board & Train programs.

  • A DK9 trainer will work with you hands at a Final Consultation when your dog’s training has been completed. This allows for you to learn the training and get comfortable with it before taking your dog home. We send you home with a detailed instructions sheet on everything your dog has learned and how tor reinforce it at home. 1 week later, we follow up with a phone call to make sure there was a successful transition from Trainer to Owner. Each training program comes with 2 follow up private lessons if necessary to ensure successful training is continued.
